Minnesota State Fair Postcard Exhibits

The Creative Activities Building at the Minnesota State Fair is best known for its exhibits of handcrafted items, but the building also has exhibits of collections.

One of the collections divisions is postcrds. The postcards are displayed in special aluminum frames with glass front panels that swing around posts. Individual collections of postcards are mounted on boards under glass or heavy plastic, usually with clear photo corner mounts. The number of cards on a board must be between 6 and 24, and the size of the board should not exceed 30" tall X 36" wide.

There are 10 categories, and all except mixed era, linens, and chromes should be antique (pre-1920).

The categories are:

  • Mixed era: trace one subject using cards from more than one era
  • Artist signed or greeting
  • Minnesota post cards
  • Views, place or buildings, etc. scenic nature (non-Minnesota)
  • People: famous, occupational, etc
  • Novelty cards
  • Transportation cards
  • Topic: historical event, dogs, cats, mining, fishing, etc
  • Linen era post cards
  • Chrome (slick finish) modern post cards

The frames are scored as follows:

  • Quality of Material — 30%
  • Design and general appearance —30%
  • Condition — 20%
  • Value in point of interest — 20%

The Twin Cities Post Card Club awards a plaque to the Sweepstakes Winner. The 2014 Sweepstakes Winner was a frame of 100 Year Old Valentine Postcards.
